Public Information Statement  Statement as of 10:00 am CDT on March 18, 2010

... 2010 National flood safety awareness week...

... Today is the fourth day of National flood safety awareness week
2010...

Your National Weather Service office at New Orleans/Baton Rouge
Louisiana is Happy to have your participation in the annual National
flood safety awareness week... which will continue through March
19... 2010.

The theme today... March 18... is determining flood risk and choosing
flood insurance. Everyone lives in a flood zone... with their risk of
flood ranging from low... to moderate... to high. Floods are four
times more likely to occur than a fire. In essence... low hazard
flood areas are also at risk. Each year... 25 to 35 percent of all
flood claims are paid for properties located outside of high risk
flood areas.

You may think that you are covered for flood damage. However... most
homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage. It only
takes a few inches of water in a home to cause thousands of dollars
in damages. Homeowners... renters... and business owners are eligible
to Purchase flood insurance as long as their community participates
in the National flood insurance program.

The National flood insurance program is a federal program
administered by the federal emergency management agency. This
program enables property owners to Purchase insurance protection
against losses from flooding. It takes 30 days after Purchase for a
policy to take effect. Therefore... it is important to buy the
insurance before the flood waters start to rise. Buy flood insurance
and stay protected.

See the federal emergency management agency web site to get more
information on the National flood insurance program... to access your
flood risk online... or find an agent close to you. The web address

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Little Rock Arkansas
259 PM CDT Thursday Mar 18 2010

Short term...tonight through Sunday night
light and variable winds will be turning southerly overnight...as
the upper ridge builds over the southern Continental U.S.. mav/mex numbers went
well into the upper 60s/70s for Friday. Opted to stay a few degrees
lower...with models over shooting as of late. However under mostly
sunny sky...temperatures should finally make it above normal.

Next storm system will be pushing into the plains late Friday.
Ridging east of the area has slowed the aforementioned
system...delaying precipitation until later Saturday. Bumped up probability of precipitation across
the area...with models in decent agreement on timing. NAM is showing
cold front to Mississippi River late Saturday...with wrap around
moisture bringing a chance of a rain/snow mix to north/northwest
Arkansas after midnight.

Went ahead and warmed temperatures up a few degrees Saturday night...with
less chance for snow accumulation now. Lessened amounts across the
area...with less than half of an inch possible across the northwest
and extreme west. However...any snow that does accumulate will not
hang around for long and will likely remain in grass and trees.

Some flurries/drizzle is still possible on Sunday...with temperatures
rebounding through the long term.

&&

Long term...Monday through Thursday
upper low will be moving east of the state Monday...with high
pressure bringing dry conditions. Ridge will be in place through
Wednesday...with the next storm system developing in the plains
Wednesday. Cold front will move into the state late Wednesday into
Thursday...bringnig showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will be
near to slightly above normal through the extended.
