NWS Forecaster Discussion
338 fxus65 klkn 191024 afdlkn Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Elko Nevada 324 am PDT Friday Mar 19 2010 Synopsis...high pressure will bring Spring-like weather this weekend...with sunny days and warming temperatures. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 40s to middle 50s today...in the 50s on Saturday...and in the 60s on Sunday. A cold front Monday will cool temperatures off a bit early next week. && Short term...today through Sunday. At 500mb high pressure will build into the forecast area today and Saturday...shifting east on Sunday as a trough moves onto the northern California coast. Skies will be mostly clear through Saturday...with increasing cirrus on Sunday. Afternoon temperatures will be warmest across the western half of the forecast area...cooling east towards the Utah state line due to the back door cold front that moved through extreme eastern Nevada and Utah last night. Winds will still be a bit breezy today...mainly east...and light across the forecast area Saturday and Sunday. Rea Long term...Sunday night through Thursday. Main focus of the long term is near the beginning as a storm system moves in from the Pacific. Latest modeling...both the GFS and ec...show this system a bit faster...with leading shortwave and cold front moving in Sunday night and Monday...and then a trailing piece of energy coming southward Monday night into Tuesday which helps cut off a closed low. Along with the faster and stronger trend in the leading shortwave...the trailing piece which helps develop the cutoff low is trending easterly...which may eventually reduce our precipitation chances on Tuesday. For now...made minor adjustments to the forecast...increasing probability of precipitation a bit across the northwest Sunday night...across the northeast Monday...and then keeping them stable or even slightly decreasing them Monday night into Tuesday /especially toward the western portion of the cwa/. Models still bring a ridge back into the region Wednesday...but energy passing across the north may affect the region Thursday or Friday. Rcm && Aviation...VFR conditions at all terminals today and tonight. Main issue will be winds...which will likely become gusty from the north-northwest by midday /19z/ if not earlier...and persist throgh the afternoon before dying off again this evening /around 2 or 3z/. Winds will be strongest at ktph...and weakest at kwmc. Rcm && Lkn watches/warnings/advisories... none. && $$ 90/93/93
