Areal Flood Warning
Statement as of 3:34 PM CDT on March 18, 2010
... The Flood Warning remains in effect until 930 PM CDT Saturday for
north central Brown County...
At 317 PM CDT... the Maple River along the North Dakota border
northeast of Frederick had risen to 10.1 feet... or just above the 10
foot flood stage. With additional water flow from North Dakota and
snowmelt runoff... the Maple will continue to rise. Persons along the
river should be prepared for flooding. Bridges may be over topped
along the North Dakota... South Dakota border near the river.
A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
All interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.
Excessive runoff from snow melt will cause elevated levels on small
creeks and streams... and ponding of water on country roads and
farmland along the banks of creeks and streams.

... The Flood Warning remains in effect until 1000 PM CDT Saturday for
small streams in southwestern Brown County...
* snowmelt runoff continues to cause high levels on streams in Brown
County... especially foot and Moccasin creeks. Foot creek has been
steady today at about 10.4 feet at the gaging site just
downstream of the Richmond Lake spillway. Moccasin creek
has also leveled off at just over 7 feet at the gaging
site on Roosevelt street today. Much of the rise on Moccasin creek
can be attributed to the high water levels on foot creek... which
is serving to backup Moccasin creek. Additional rises on Moccasin
and foot creeks are possible over the next few days. Homes and
businesses near Moccasin creek could be affected by this high
water.
A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.

NWS Forecaster Discussion
182 fxus63 kabr 190842 afdabr Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Aberdeen South Dakota 342 am CDT Friday Mar 19 2010 Short term...through Sunday Upper trough moving overhead with a surface cold advection regime. Upstream...temperatures have dipped into the middle/low 20s with widespread stratus and flurry activity. Those conditions are spreading...and with steep low level profiles through 5kft...stratus/stato cumulus and flurry activity throughout are expected through the day. Current temperatures this morning are a good substitute for todays highs...as we will see only intermittent sun at best and continued cold advection. As upper trough heads east and surface high south...warm advection spreads from the northern plains down into the County Warning Area. Will see steadily warming 925/850 temperatures and a more favorable mixing wind. Long term...Sunday night through Tuesday night The period starts with an upper ridge axis over the region. Westerly winds aloft and possibly southwest surface winds will create a decent chance of warmer temperatures on Monday and Monday night. By Tuesday another system moves in from the west. Ec and GFS are not in complete agreement on the progression of the low with the GFS being just a little faster and the ec bringing the system a little farther south. Leaned a little more toward the ec and its southern solution. Either way kept slight chances of rain and snow in through Tuesday night. Temperatures will be colder after frontal passage on Tuesday. && Aviation... as an upper level trough moves through the region MVFR ceilings will stick around into Saturday morning. VFR visibilities are expected through the rest of the day. && Hydrology... many creeks and rivers will remain flooded across the County Warning Area through next week. Cooler temperatures this weekend will likely slow the amount of runoff somewhat...but this is only a delay until warmer air returns for the weekend. && Abr watches/warnings/advisories... South Dakota...none. Minnesota...none. && $$ Short term...Connelly long term...wise aviation...wise Weather.Gov/Aberdeen
