Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah
917 PM MDT sun Mar 21 2010

Synopsis...a Pacific storm system will move into the Great Basin
early this week. Warm and dry high pressure aloft will return for
the midweek period.

&&

Discussion...the upper trough moving into the Pacific northwest this
evening still on track to dig southeast through the Great Basin early
this week. Looking at a two-stage trough passage Monday/Tuesday.
The first stage will be the ejecting shortwave ahead of the main
trough currently over western Idaho/eastern or. This feature should track due
east tonight/early Monday with a shallow cold push through northern
Utah Monday morning. The best middle-level cold air and dynamic lift
likely to remain along and north of the Utah/Idaho border. Current low-
end probability of precipitation primarily north of kslc look good for now.

The second stage will be the main trough passage from the northwest
beginning late Monday night. Strong ridging along the West Coast
behind this feature will result in a further southward push
through Utah Tuesday. This second push will re-energize the near
700mb thermal boundary that stalled over central Utah Monday. Good
fgen along this boundary combined with trough dynamics and colder
air aloft should generate a fairly significant area of precipitation in
central Utah. Instability showers a good bet across the north
associated with the cold pool aloft.

Strong ridging returns midweek...bringing dry conditions and above
normal temperatures back to Utah by Thursday. The next series of
shortwaves off the Pacific will shove the ridge east and bring a
threat of generally light precipitation back to the area late Friday
through Saturday.

&&

Aviation...VFR ceilings will prevail at the kslc terminal overnight.
The next operational concern is the timing of a frontal passage at
kslc late Monday morning. Winds this evening will hold out of the
west...then come around to south again after 06z. Ceilings expected to
gradually lower Monday morning in advance of this front. Ceilings could
fall below 7k feet above ground level at times Monday afternoon in heavier showers.
