Area forecast discussion

Synopsis...a cool and drier northerly flow will develop across 
the region tonight and prevail through Saturday as high pressure 
builds into the area. The high will shift east later Sunday ahead 
of the next Pacific storm.

Discussion...the cold pool aloft associated with the upper trough 
moving east of the area is sliding past just to our east this evening. 
This is keeping a few instability snow showers going over mainly the 
northestern 1/4 of the County Warning Area and these should end in the next couple of 
hours. Have dropped the advisory for the Uinta Mountains as these snow 
showers are not expected to bring much if any accumulation. 


The tight northerly surface gradient is across southern Utah with a 
looser easterly gradient across the north. The winds across the 
south will be weakening and decoupling overnight as the gradient 
relaxes but enhanced easterly canyon winds will persist into Sat 
morning along the Wasatch front. 


Skies will clear overnight and remain so through Sat as the upstream 
short wave ridge builds in. Temperatures should start to rebound Sat then 
more so on sun as the ridge axis shifts east...the flow backs 
around to southwesterly and the airmass continues to warm. 


Next trough is a little faster and farther east in the new 00z GFS 
with a cold front now crossing northern Utah Monday morning. 


Updated forecasts earlier to account for greater coverage of snow 
showers then again more recently to end advisory.

Aviation...the prevailing wind direction overnight at the kslc 
terminal will be southerly. Ceilings are expected to remain above 7k 
feet overnight with skies gradually clearing.
