... 2010 National flood safety awareness week...

... Today is the fourth day of National flood safety awareness week
2010...

Your National Weather Service office at New Orleans/Baton Rouge
Louisiana is Happy to have your participation in the annual National
flood safety awareness week... which will continue through March
19... 2010.

The theme today... March 18... is determining flood risk and choosing
flood insurance. Everyone lives in a flood zone... with their risk of
flood ranging from low... to moderate... to high. Floods are four
times more likely to occur than a fire. In essence... low hazard
flood areas are also at risk. Each year... 25 to 35 percent of all
flood claims are paid for properties located outside of high risk
flood areas.

You may think that you are covered for flood damage. However... most
homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage. It only
takes a few inches of water in a home to cause thousands of dollars
in damages. Homeowners... renters... and business owners are eligible
to Purchase flood insurance as long as their community participates
in the National flood insurance program.

The National flood insurance program is a federal program
administered by the federal emergency management agency. This
program enables property owners to Purchase insurance protection
against losses from flooding. It takes 30 days after Purchase for a
policy to take effect. Therefore... it is important to buy the
insurance before the flood waters start to rise. Buy flood insurance
and stay protected.

See the federal emergency management agency web site to get more
information on the National flood insurance program... to access your
flood risk online... or find an agent close to you. The web address

Northern Alaska forecast discussion
National Weather Service Fairbanks Alaska
330 am akdt Thursday Mar 18 2010

Discussion...
the models are in good agreement through Saturday. An upper ridge
over northern Alaska will elongated out with the northern portion
splitting off into a closed high aloft across the Arctic Ocean by
Friday evening. A deep low will move across the Sea of Okhotsk late
in the weekend. This will help to pump up a downstream ridge
across the central Bering Sea. In the Middle Range...this ridge is
expected to form into a strong ridge aloft in the vicinity of wrangle
island by 00z Wednesday. The NCEP rmop values increase with time early
next week with this feature.

We continue in a prolonged period of mainly dry weather over central
and northern Alaska. This is expected to persist through the
weekend as a blocking pattern with a series of closed highs and
lows displaced from the Mainland will be the main weather features.

North Slope...winds will increase over the Northwest Arctic coast
today and Friday with some local areas of blowing snow. The rest
of the Arctic coast will see warming temperatures with dry conditions
as high pressure persists there.

Interior...expect above average temperatures through the weekend
with dry conditions in the central interior. A chance of snow
exists for the southeastern interior Friday night...no significant
accumulations expected for that area. Winds will pick up today and
persist into early Friday morning over the interior with winds
through the Alaska Range passes to 40 miles per hour...diminishing on Friday.

West Coast...winds will increase along the West Coast of Alaska as
an occluded front moves east into the central Bering Sea and
slowly dissipates there. Snow accumulations up to 2 inches
expected on St Lawrence Island Thursday night and Friday morning. Also a
chance of snow along the West Coast from Nome to Hooper Bay Friday
through Sat. Accumulations there will be generally light.
